FORETOLD

From the June 1885 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The church which is to guide and fulfill the present and coming ages, whatever else it may be, must be intellectual. The scientific mind must have a faith which is science.

There will be a New Church founded on moral Science, at first cold and naked, a babe in a manger again, the algebra and mathematics of ethical law, the church of Man to come without hosannas, or psaltery, or sackbut; but it will have heaven and earth for its beams and rafters; Science for symbol and illustration. It will fast enough gather beauty, music, picture, poetry.

Worship.

Let any man set his heart in these days to do what is right, and nothing else, and it will not be long before his brow is stamped with all that goes to make up the heroical expression—with noble indignation—noble self-restraint, great hopes, great sorrows; perhaps with the print of the martyr's crown of thorns.

If wrong rules right and merit—
If virtue toils for sin,—
However wide were Heaven's gates,
I could not enter in.
