Local Charities

From the May 1886 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A very valuable Directory of Boston's Beneficent Organizations has been published by Cupples, Upham & Co. It was prepared originally for the Associated Charities, a society which has already done much to prevent fraud and pauperism, but still has a mountainous task before it.

In looking through the 200 pages of the Directory, one is amazed at the multitude of societies grouped in its fourteen classes, from Ambulance to United States Naval Hospital. There is a valuable Index, too, of nearly thirty pages, which is really alphabetical, the work of some unknown but evidently skilful hand. There are suggestions about laws, burials, consuls, and a list of publications touching the subject.
