THE CHURCH MANUAL

From the October 1895 issue of The Christian Science Journal

This article was later republished in Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896: Mis. 148:7-21

In a letter to the editor Mrs. Eddy writes:— "The Rules and By-laws in the manual of The First Church of Christ Scientist, Boston, were not made in solemn conclave and with arbitrary sentiment as in ancient Sanhedrim. They were not the opinions and commands of one person regulating the actions of another. They were written at different dates, and, as the occasion required; they sprang from necessity, the logic of events, from the immediate demand for them, a need, that must be met for the honor and defense of our cause. Therefore their simple, scientific basis, so requisite to demonstrate genuine Christian Science, will do for the race what absolute doctrines, destined for present and future generations, may not as readily accomplish.
