It is time that this tardy acknowledgment of the healing which Christian Science brought to me be given to the Field.
In the fall of 1890 I began to suffer with pain in my back and hip, and, as the weeks went by, it became more severe. At first I would be awakened in the middle of the night and suffer intensely for about half an hour, but this period gradually lengthened until the nights were one long nightmare of suffering; the days were not so bad, but that which terrified me most was that I was becoming deformed. One shoulder and the opposite hip projected out of place, and I was gradually being drawn forward from the waist, while a lateral curvature made the spine describe a letter S.
This we recognized at once as heredity, one of my parents had expressed this infirmity, and through many years of suffering had never received the least help from medical treatment. The intensity of my suffering could not be likened to anything but a "jumping toothache," and it extended from the spine and hip to the heel.
