The words and works of Jesus of Nazareth were so extraordinary that they caused a great mental upheaval and started the question which, after hundreds of years, still continues to be asked, "Was Jesus Christ the Son of God?" This question caused much discussion in Jesus' time. Some believed that he was the Son of God, others that he was not. They begged of Jesus to tell them plainly, but his affirmative answer they could not understand, and his declaration of his unity with God was made the basis for his arrest and crucifixion.
The Christian world is still divided over this question, and is it not because it does not yet understand Jesus' explanation of himself? Did the followers of Jesus in our time understand him, would they not give a rational explanation of him?
Jesus presented to the world a human manifestation as well as a divine spirituality, and it was his seemingly dual nature that caused men to differ as to his origin. Jesus appeared in form as a mortal man, and theology has attempted to explain his sonship with God, asserting that the fleshly Jesus was one with the Father, and this attempt to make mortality one with God has brought confusion.
