From the April 1907 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A sufficient length of time has elapsed since my healing was manifested through Christian Science, to permit the removal of all doubt as to any possibility of the return of former conditions; hence this testimony goes forth to the world for what it is worth, as a further help in the redemption of suffering mankind. Until sixteen months ago I was a fair specimen of the average man of the world who has been permitted to drift away from church and lead a life of carelessness. I was filled with iniquity and void of Christianity. More pleasure was found in the company of worldly associates and riotous living than in the company of my family or my own home. Generally speaking, I was what the world is pleased to term "a good fellow."

My attention was first directed to Christian Science for the physical help. The liquor habit had begun to make inroads on my health, causing kidney and liver complaints. That brought me to a sense of the pace my downward career had assumed, hence my antagonism to Christian Science was more easily overcome. A practitioner was called and treatment for the liquor habit was begun. My healing may easily be classed as instantaneous, as since the first treatment there has never been the slightest desire for intoxicating liquors of any kind. It was some time before I realized that the pain supposed to come from the kidney and liver complaints had also disappeared, so astonished was I at the wonderful results obtained from the Science thus far.

Soon after I realized that a permanent healing had been effected, I began the reading of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mrs. Eddy, and attended regularly both the Sunday and Wednesday evening services. After reading Science and Health through the first time, the habit of chewing tobacco suddenly disappeared, then the smoking habit was discontinued, both having been daily companions for over thirty years. Other habits have disappeared during the past twelve months without any effort on my part, such as swearing, card playing, etc. I consider the physical healing of great value, but not to be compared with what I have received through the moral and mental healing, — the understanding of Life, Truth, and Love, as spiritually explained by Mrs. Eddy. My sense of life and its daily problems has been reversed to me in many ways. Things that formerly offered much pleasure now seem to be least attractive, and vice versa. I find use for Christian Science each hour of the day and each day of the week. Every undertaking calls for an apprehension of its teachings, in order that a more complete and comprehensive understanding may be had of that which is about to be entered upon. This fact alone proves the value of this great blessing as an even -present help, in business as in all else.
