From the September 1907 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I am not a Christian Scientist, and only came to the Science in the past when I was driven to it; yet one would think that I ought to be a very ardent disciple of this faith after being delivered, as it were, from the jaws of death. During the fall and winter of 1904 I was reduced to a very serious state with bowel trouble. I had been trying different medicines, but without any result. I had had an acquaintance who was troubled with the same difficulty, and had watched his case. He tried various medicines to get relief, and finally, having tried a certain remedy as a last resort, but without success, he passed away from this plane. I also came to the same stage, and as I had the experience of my friend vividly before me, my thoughts can be imagined when the medicine failed to give relief. I was also a morphine user, and had been for something like two years.

My wife had been a Christian Scientist for some years, and I had heard frequently of the wonderful things Science was doing; yet I doubted, and at times was not the most friendly to Christian Science; still I let my wife go her way and I went mine. When, however, I was reduced to this extreme condition, my wife prevailed upon me to have a Christian Science practitioner come to my relief. One was sent for and came, but expressed some doubt as to whether he would take my case, until I promised him that I would buckle down to business and do some good work at reading the Bible, and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and also promised that I would try and not take any more of the morphine. On my making these promises, the Scientist took up the case. The result was that the next day I had relief from the bowel trouble, and in something over two weeks from the beginning of the treatments I was freed from the dreadful morphine habit and have remained so to this day, not having the least desire for the drug now, although I had struggled and made great efforts to free myself from it before. I am very grateful for all that Christian Science has done for me.
