I first became interested in Christian Science in February, 1905, although I had heard of it long before this time, as I have a step-sister who has been a Scientist for five years. I, however, thought she had lost her mind, and said so. I also thought she should be put in an asylum, but I have since had good cause to change my mind, for I was marvelously healed of a disease of the jaw-bone and fully developed blood-poisoning. I had two dentists and four physicians to treat me. One dentist, after treating me a week, said he did not know what the trouble was or how to help me, so he called in two others, and after doing all they could they advised me to go to a specialist. I then went to the most celebrated specialist known here. He treated me, but I only grew steadily worse, had to give up all work, and was confined to my bed. My regular physician then visited me every day, and operated eleven times. I was suffering agony and growing weaker every day. There was a great enlargement on my jaw and all of my teeth had been pulled out of the right side. I could only take liquids, and even that was through a tube. After a number of very painful operations I was told that I must go home, settle up my affairs, and come back for a last and final operation, which would be the removal of the entire jaw-bone.
This step-sister who had spoken to me of Science before, lives very near the infirmary, and while I was waiting in a most hopeless state for the surgeon that morning, I decided to go over and talk to her. I told her what had been decided upon and she earnestly urged me to try Christian Science. I told her I was willing to give up everything and would do just as she said. We then both wrote to a practitioner, and while waiting for him to get the letter she said she would help me all she could. She told me to take the bandages off of my jaw, which I did and rode home, a distance of three miles, in a drizzling, freezing rain. This did not hurt me nor have I suffered any pain since. The next day I received the expected letter from the practitioner, who lovingly and effectively worked for me for six weeks. By that time I found myself completely healed. The swelling began to disappear at once. I could open my mouth the second day, and as I have said before, the pain disappeared at once, never to return. There is not even a scar on my face and my health is perfect.
After suffering for eight months and spending a great deal for medical treatment (although I want to say that the doctors were very kind, and very generous to me), I was healed by Christian Science in six weeks at a trifling cost. There was no suffering, no drugs, no knife. And then I have learned how to know God and how to live closer to Him. I am naturally grateful to the Divine power that healed me, and to Mrs. Eddy for having discovered how to apply this power to human needs, so that all may get the benefits of Christian Science.
