I have had many beautiful demonstrations of the power of Truth, and after the last great typhoon experience (published in the Christian Science Sentinel of Aug. 24, 1907), I cannot any longer have a shadow of a doubt, in all my daily work and trouble, as to the Father's ever-presence. My many ailments went slowly, but that kept me studying and reading, and now I seldom read anything outside the Bible and Christian Science publications, except the daily paper. My wife went to England some time before I met the Christian Science friends, and stayed for nineteen months. She went for relief from nervous trouble, but did not find it. She did, however, find a rheumatic trouble, and a specialist said she would have to rest or she would never get rid of a serious condition of her knee, while the family doctor had said that owing to the bad state of her health he dared not order her to keep in bed. So I wired her to come back, for I knew I could help her with the understanding of Truth which I had gained; and she came. She was, as she believed, benefited by the sea trip, but wondered why everything seemed to come her way on board, and how so many people were anxious to please her. I knew this was the result of the thoughts of harmony held for her by the friends here. She rather reluctantly left off her bandages, but in two months' time she could not have told, on the spur of the moment, which knee had been affected. The first evening at home she complained of the rheumatic trouble, and was quite vexed when I told her she need not have it, that it was only the result of belief, and that it would go as soon as she changed her belief. She preferred to be treated, as she expressed it, to being made fun of, and after giving her a Christian Science treatment I asked her to get up and take a walk round the room. I almost laughed to see her astonishment at finding that she did not have the ailment any more, and when she looked around to see where it had gone, as it were.
That was a year ago and the trouble has not returned. This convinced her of the truth of Christian Science. Her mother, brother, and sister at home (my wife's family live in England) used to write such long, dismal letters, full of descriptions of all kinds of ailments they were having. Now the letters are full of life and cheerfulness, and no ailments are mentioned. Her elder sister had a chronic throat trouble. One Sunday when she was feeling very badly, she caught sight of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which my wife had left for them. She began to read, became interested, and after a couple of hours' reading found that her throat was relieved; and though later she had a slight relapse, she is now entirely healed. Their daily need is supplied and their financial condition has been immensely improved, all being due to Christian Science.
I am not unmindful of the gratitude due to our beloved Leader, for I realize what it has meant to her to travel alone, with bleeding footsteps, a road which we find a difficulty in following even with her priceless books to guide us. The grandeur and magnitude of the Christian Science demonstrations sometimes make me feel awed, especially when I think how for nearly half a century I had persisted in defying, hating, and disobeying God, the loving Father. I have been marvelously helped through the teachings of our beloved Leader, and am filled with love and gratitude. I am striving, and shall increase my striving, to follow in the footsteps of our Master, so clearly set forth in our Leader's teachings. God bless her!— Hong Kong, China.
