Twenty-six years ago I was taken with a severe abdominal trouble, which in the course of time developed into a bowel complaint. It was said that an operation alone could free me of this disease, and I submitted to this torture three times at intervals of five years, and once of only one year. When the fourth operation, however, seemed to be necessary my courage failed, and I sought a sanitarium as a last resort. After having spent five months there I was dismissed as being completely healed; but after a short time the trouble appeared again and necessitated another operation. This brought me to despair, especially as I was bedfast at that time from rheumatism and throat trouble, with accompanying fever.
In this dark hour a relative gave me some information about Christian Science. I immediately turned to it as to a divine message, and asked a Christian Science practitioner for help. She began to work for me on the same day, and I immediately felt the influence of divine Love on my perturbed thought. Three weeks later I went to be examined by a medical authority, who stated that the operation was no longer necessary! The physician of course was ignorant as to what had brought me deliverance. Every expression of gratitude is insufficient for this revelation of compassionate divine Love and this act of grace, in the sight of such evidence!
For the first time in many years the organs resumed their natural functions; the rheumatic pains that had tormented me at all seasons vanished within a short time, and the throat, too, was soon healed. Formerly I had to stay at home very often on account of this trouble: now I rejoice in the sure feeling that I live, move, and breathe in divine Love, and so I go out in every kind of weather. Later, a severe catarrhal affection of the lungs appeared, with which I had been afflicted at intervals all my life and which had tilled me with fear, for it was believed that I had inherited it from my mother, who had died young. Medical skill as well as the use of baths at Soden and Salzungen had failed to heal the disease. I again asked for help in Christian Science, and the marvelous thing occurred; the power of this evil was broken. I am deeply grateful for all the faithful help given me. and especially for the understanding of Christ. Truth. I feel impelled also to thank those who dispense to us the spiritual food in our meetings and services.
