CHRISTIAN METAPHYSICS

From the July 1910 issue of The Christian Science Journal

ST. PAUL thus characterized his own preaching: "We speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: but we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory. Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." Christian Science has brought to light in this age the Science of Life, the knowledge of the truth as to the great causative Mind called God, the creator of the spiritual universe including man, and this in fulfilment of the divine revelation made by Christ Jesus. This Science is the practical teaching which enables men to realize their birthright and their heritage, as God's children.

Almost two thousand years ago Christ Jesus entered the arena of human experience and enunciated the good news of the kingdom of God. His teachings regarding God's purposes toward man, and the proofs he gave as to their truth, through his works in healing, regenerating, and transforming men, startled the world, asleep in the bondage of false doctrines, creeds, and practices, for they were indeed revolutionary. His demonstrations of healing reversed the supposed course of asserted material laws, and upset the very rudiments of generally accepted teachings and practices as to the nature of substance and Mind, even as Columbus and Copernicus reversed the accepted opinions of their day.

Jesus said, "I am not come to destroy [the law], but to fulfil;" and yet careful study shows us that Christ Jesus did break every canon of so-called physical law by healing all manner of diseases and by performing other remarkable works. His every demonstration gave proof that, although everything may seem to be material, this is not so in fact; that the things which appear real to the senses are simply mental phenomena, even as are the objects cognized in a dream. In breaking this dream, Jesus found great difficulty in making the people understand the metaphysical nature of his demonstrations and their import. Had the world understood the vital import of Christ Jesus' statements of Truth, and grown into the knowledge of God's law as he understood it and as he was trying to awaken mankind to understand it, how differently the pages of history would have read; but mortal obtuseness is very clearly seen, even in our Lord's closest students. In the narrative which is recorded in Mark's Gospel, immediately following the feeding of the four thousand people without material supply (that marked object-lesson of the mental nature of things), we find that the disciples were disturbed over the fact that they had taken no bread with them on the ship. This lack of ability to grasp the metaphysical thought of the Master called forth his reproachful words, "How is it that ye do not understand?"
