Over four years ago I was an invalid, my back being so weak that I could not walk any distance, nor even sit up long at a time. I had gone through two surgical operations within eight months, by one of the best specialists in the state, but after the last operation I continued to grow worse. My eyes were also very weak. I wore glasses constantly for three years, and the optician who examined my eyes said that I ought to have stronger lenses.
At this time Christian Science was brought to my notice, and I wrote to a practitioner in a city near by for help. She advised me to purchase a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, saying that people with worse diseases than mine had been healed by reading this book. I never shall forget the afternoon that I received it. I could not imagine what this book contained which could relieve me of my constant pain, and my eyes were too weak to read much for myself, so my husband read to me that night and the next day, which was Sunday. Monday he had to go to his business, and while I was lying on the bed the thought came to me to try to read a little for myself. I got the book and turned to the chapter, "Science, Theology, Medicine," and began to read. I do not know how long I read, but I do know that I put into practice what I understood, and that after the second day's reading I never had to ask my husband, or any one else, to read to me, for I could read any length of time without injury to my eyes.
This was my first demonstration, or answer to prayer as we understand in Christian Science. In about a week, I took all my medicine (which was no small amount) and threw some of it away and burned the rest. The next week I discharged my cook, and while I was not completely healed, I was so much better that I felt able to do my work. After I had studied about two months for myself. I wrote to the practitioner who had advised me to study Science and Health, asking her to help me, which she did. Since that time, now over four years, I have not worn glasses or taken any material remedies, and have been in better health than for many years.
