About five years ago I began to have serious stomach trouble, being unable for a week at a time to retain food or drink. For almost a year I was under the care of osteopathic physicians, at the end of which time I began treatment under one of the best physicians of Memphis, Tenn. The physicians there pronounced my case an ulcerated condition of the stomach. I grew worse and often had hemorrhages. I was operated upon in September, the physicians saying I would die in less than ten days if this was not done. The operation was said to be a success, but for seven months I continued to be very ill. Then I was operated upon by a distinguished surgeon, but eight days after the operation fever set in which affected the vital organs and intestines, so that any exertion on my part would cause such excruciating pain that the physician had to administer an opiate. In a short time the conditions were almost as bad as before, and I was of course a great deal more discouraged.
I spent a part of the winter on the gulf coast, but came back not much benefited. Another operation was advised, but I had lost all faith in materia medica. As I had "suffered many things of many physicians," and was growing worse rather than better, I decided to let things develop as they would. In June a Christian Science friend visited us. She talked to me while she was here, so that I became sufficiently interested in the teaching to read the text-book, Science and Health. In July a great sorrow came into my life, and my friend helped me scientifically. This caused me to become more interested in this truth, so in September I called in a practitioner, and in about two months I was healed.
