Testimonies of Healing

Thinking that it may be a benefit...

From the May 1912 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Thinking that it may be a benefit to some one, and wishing to express my gratitude for what Christian Science has done for me, I send in this testimony. When I was eleven years old, my mother passed on, with what is known as hereditary lung trouble. Her relatives for a good many years back had passed on the same way, and of course I believed in the law of heredity and supposed I had to go through the same experience. After my mother died, I was left to make my own way in the world alone, and I went from Michigan to Denver, Col. After being there for a few years I became very ill with a disease of the throat, and also became blind in one eye. After three specialists in Denver had given me up, and said I could not live more than a month at the most, a Christian Scientist, who lived in the same house with me, loaned me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy.

At that time I had not taken any food for seventeen days with the exception of one glass of milk daily. I commenced to read Science and Health, and in three weeks was perfectly well and had gained twenty pounds. I then bought a copy of this book for myself, read it about half through and put it in my trunk, and did not look at it again for five years. In the mean time, I came to Los Angeles, and soon after I got here I commenced to cough a great deal, and lost weight. I went to the medical director of the Y. M. C. A. of this city, and after a careful examination he told me that I would not live more than six months. I then went to a physician friend of mine, who has practised medicine for fifty years. He told me the same thing. This, of course, made me fear that I would go the same way my mother did. I grew worse, and finally as a last resort, after all material means had failed, I took Science and Health out of my trunk again, and began to study it. I went to a practitioner and was given eighteen treatments, and in two months I was entirely well. This was over three years ago, and I have never used material means since, and have enjoyed perfect health. I therefore feel that I owe my life to Christian Science. I will say that I have been benefited physically, mentally, financially, and spiritually, and the only way I can show my gratitude for what God has done for me is by living the life that our dear Leader teaches us to live in Science and Health.—
