Six years ago, while enjoying good health, I became acquainted with Christian Science, the immediate occasion being a friend's healing from a dangerous and acute disease. At that time I was given some literature on the subject which aroused my interest and led me to read and study assiduously, for I felt that this must be the truth. Gradually I gained a sufficient understanding of Christian Science to be able to overcome the minor disturbances which are liable to occur in my profession as a midwife.
In September, 1909, I was seized very suddenly with a malignant and painful disease and became incapacitated. Under the circumstances it seemed best to call a physician, though I took no medicine, as I had lost faith in it. My friend immediately wrote to a Christian Science practitioner whom she knew, and who was in America just at that time, and asked her to take up treatment. I had to go through a period full of trials and could not see why improvement should be so slow to manifest itself; but at last it became clear to me that I had made a reality of the disease and had fought it as such, whereas the right course was to recognize the trouble as a mental condition, and moreover as unreal. Improvement then followed, and Truth was the victor, although all hope of my recovery had been given up.
This experience lifted me and my friend to a higher level in the understanding of Truth, and I am thankful to God, and also feel deeply indebted to Mrs. Eddy.—Koppigen, Canton Bern, Switzerland.
