Five years have passed since I became interested in Christian Science. Judging by appearances, which is contrary to Jesus' counsel, I was in a very serious condition, mentally and physically, and worse than all, I had grown skeptical. I had passed through much trouble, sorrow, and suffering, and could not associate this with a loving Father. I could not see why He allowed His children to suffer so much.
I had tried all the material remedies that offered any hope; in fact I had given up all hope, when a neighbor brought me some copies of the Sentinel to read. I had always scoffed at what I supposed Christian Science to be, so I thought to read and criticize, but I found out I was mistaken as to the meaning of Christian Science. After reading these Sentinels I was desirous of reading more and called on this same man, who supplied me with several others. After reading them I was not long in securing a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I commenced to read this, with the Bible, a book I had decided could not be understood, but since reading Science and Health, it is much plainer and I have learned to love it as well as Science and Health. With the study of these two books and some help from a Christian Science practitioner, I have become a strong, well woman. I had stomach disorder and a bronchial affection from a child, with constant fear of lung trouble; and also female trouble. I have taken no medicine since I turned to God, but have learned that God never made these things, for all He made was good, so I need not fear them any longer.
My little daughter was healed in a very short time by Christian Science treatment, and my husband was healed of appendicitis and neuralgia. It would take a long time to tell of the many blessings we have received, for all of which I give thanks daily. I trust this testimony will lead others to this truth which is raising up thousands from helplessness and sin. We daily thank God for that noble woman, Mrs. Eddy, and her unselfish life. Many are rising up and calling her blessed. Her life and works are forever pointing us the way to God and better things, and we can begin to realize what Jesus meant when he said, "The kingdom of heaven is at hand." I want to prove my gratitude by my life, as our revered Leader has said in the text-book of Christian Science (p. 3): "Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech." —Plainview, Texas.
