In numerous ways I have been benefited by Christian Science; so also has my little son, who has never had anything but this truth for medicine. I have been studying Christian Science only about five years, although I have known of it and been helped by it since I was ten years old. For a few years, however, when maturing into womanhood, error urged its claim, and I seemingly turned away from spiritual things, until suffering and "the longing to be good and true" (Hymnal, p. 98) "brought the light again."
Some time ago we had a beautiful demonstration of the power of Truth. My brother, who is living with me, was thrown from a horse, and when discovered was apparently in a dying condition. The physician who was immediately summoned, pronounced his injury a fracture of the skull, and said there was no hope for him. When my husband, who is not a Scientist, informed me of the accident, he also asked me to telephone to a Christian Science practitioner, as he knew from the nature of the injury that materia medica could not save my brother. I did so, and the practitioner began work at once.
The accident happened about three miles from home, and before my brother reached us he had become partially conscious. The physician was dismissed, as we knew we must rely on God alone. To materialistic thinkers this seemed a terrible thing to do, and it caused a great deal of unfavorable comment; nevertheless, the healing work went on steadily, and my brother was out of bed in a few days. This was a surprise to many people, for they thought that he would either pass away or be left insane.
