"The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." This was made most clear to me early in 1913, when I was healed of what seemed to be serious injuries. I had slipped on the sidewalk and the faintness was so unusual that I called for help from a Christian Science practitioner. In just a little while I was greatly relieved but found I could not raise my arm.
As I had special business plans for the week and they depended considerably upon my having the use of my arm, I decided to have some one examine it. The practitioner mentioned a surgeon, and when he came he said at once that the shoulder was dislocated. While putting the arm back in place he found that there was also some sort of a break, which was located the next day by the X-ray. It was close to the shoulder, practically in the socket, and one piece of bone was so far out of place that the doctor said he could neither bring it back into place nor hold it without operating, but that I might have a fairly usable joint, as all that would be necessary for him to do would be to remove the loose piece of bone later. I reminded him at this point that a Christian Science practitioner was working on the case, and that where he (the doctor) looked to nature, we turned absolutely to God for everything, and that God's law is perfect. He agreed, if the results were satisfactory, to divide the credit with Christian Science.
Through the power of Truth as demonstrated in Christian Science, in a little over five weeks the bone went back into place and knit, giving me a perfect joint. In less than three months I had the full use of the arm as before. More than the relief from physical suffering, however, I value the quieter, happier thought that came with the extra hours of study of the literature given us by our revered Leader, including the Christian Science Hymnal.
