Testimonies of Healing

As a former physician and surgeon...

From the August 1915 issue of The Christian Science Journal

AS a former physician and surgeon, who in his hour of darkest physical and mental need has experienced the utter fallacy of his profession, it is my privilege and joy to testify to the fact that Christian Science does heal the sick; it does diminish and destroy fear, and its perfect adaptation to all human need is available here and now to every honest seeker after Truth.

I was stricken several years ago with gall-bladder infection, complicated with stomach trouble. There developed sallow skin, loss of appetite, great distress after eating, almost daily headaches, and severe chills every week or ten days, followed by profuse night sweats. Unable to sit up for any length of time, I was obliged first to neglect my professional practice, and finally to dispose of it entirely at great financial loss. After I had consulted some of the best physicians and surgeons in the country, and resorted without avail to practically all known drugs and remedial agencies bearing on my case, it became apparent that my only hope of recovery lay in operating on the gall-bladder and removing its contents.

In the mean time my brother and his wife, who are Christian Scientists, tried to interest me in metaphysical healing, but their efforts were met with bitter prejudice on my part against what I thought Christian Science to be, especially as regards its application to organic disease. While making arrangements for the operation, I was again approached by my brother, who said that it would make him very happy if I would consult a Christian Science practitioner before carrying out my plan. To please him I placed myself in the hands of a practitioner, and at the end of six days' treatment the only change observable to myself was the disappearance of the headaches. I still carried the mental picture of a gall-bladder so diseased that an operation was the only alternative. My surprise may be imagined when, upon coming from under the influence of the anesthetic, I was informed that the surgeons had found an absolutely normal gall-bladder, in consequence of which no incision was required.
