It is with a feeling of deep gratitude, though with shame for letting so long a time elapse before sending my testimony to the periodicals, that I now try to express some of the love and gratitude I feel to Christian Science, and to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy.
In the spring of 1903 I asked a friend who was in Christian Science to explain this teaching to me from the Bible point of view. I seemed surrounded with a light I had not known before, and with a peace that was new and unmistakable, the peace spoken of in the fourteenth chapter of John. I should not easily have left the church in which I had been brought up, except that for some time before hearing of Christian Science I had longed for a clearer light to enable me to tread the right path and obey Jesus' commands. The guidance seemed insufficient and obscure, and circumstances insurmountable. When I learned what Christian Science taught, I found certain guidance, and also saw that no circumstance could prevent me from obeying the Master's commands. In fact, I found that all his commands were imperative and must be obeyed, and there was one, which said "Heal the sick," that I had never noticed before.
I did not hesitate, but began my study at once. I studied the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, together with the Bible. I then knew very little about the periodicals or Lesson-Sermon, being unable, as I thought, to go to the services or to come in touch with Christian Scientists. I remember the great relief experienced on learning that there is no personal devil, that evil is a false belief obtaining in the human consciousness alone, and can therefore be overcome by the knowledge of God: that God is divine Love and ever present.
