"Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there?" expresses the state of my consciousness which was answered by the sweet assurance, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings" (Science and Health, Pref., p. vii).
From birth I was not strong, being subject to malaria and all the so-called children's diseases in their worst forms. Later on sciatica and inflammatory rheumatism appeared, and soon the trouble developed into a so-called valvular heart disease and a nervous breakdown. After staying in a hospital all summer, I was taken to California in the hope that I would derive benefit from the climate, but after being there a year I had grown gradually worse. Various methods of treatment were tried and different kinds of medicine were given me by the best physicians. All agreed that the trouble was organic and that I would soon pass away.
In this condition I turned to God, and was quickly healed through Christian Science. Glasses that had been worn for eight years became useless, and chronic catarrh of the worst form quickly yielded to the power of Truth. Since my healing I have been able to do more work than ever before, and to enjoy life. Now I can say with St. Paul, "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." Words cannot express my gratitude for the understanding of what God is, and of man's relation to Him, which has been revealed to me through the study of Christian Science.—Shelbyville, Ky.
