Testimonies of Healing

From the December 1919 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A few years ago I fell, while in the mountains, and injured my spine. After the physicians had told me they could do nothing for me, that an abscess was likely to form and the end of the spine might have to be removed, and after suffering untold agony for a year, as a last resort I went to a Christian Science practitioner. I had no faith in Christian Science and knew absolutely nothing about it except the uncomplimentary remarks I had heard from others, so when the practitioner began to tell me something of its teaching, I said I did not care to know anything about it as I had come only for the healing. While she was lovingly doing her work my thought was far from loving, and when I left her, it was with the thought of never returning; but something seemed to say that I would not expect a physician to heal me in one treatment, so why not give her a chance. In four treatments I was completely healed of the trouble, and it has never returned in the five years since.

Even then I was not quite willing to give Christian Science the credit; but when some two months later sick headaches of ten years' standing, from which physicians had told me I would never receive any relief, were overcome in a short time, I began to take up the study in earnest. However, I could not understand one thing of what I read in Science and Health, and after reading it three months I said I did not believe anyone understood the book; but one day on taking up the Lesson-Sermon after reading the Bible passages, the first sentence I read in Science and Health opened up to me with such light, bringing such a train of thoughts with it that I was almost overwhelmed. From that time on the meaning has continued to unfold. Since then many discordant conditions have been overcome, one a dislocation of the elbow, which went into place in less than ten minutes after treatment was begun, and I never felt the least inconvenience in using the hand or arm, getting my dinner the same as usual about two hours after the accident. Every trial has brought me closer to the one great Mind, and the spiritual understanding I have gained can never be told, nor can I ever be grateful enough for it, or to those who have so lovingly helped me to see the light.

Can any praise, or love, or words express what we feel for the dear woman, Mrs. Eddy, who brought this message to us? Can we ever be grateful enough for the message she has given us, that we too may see God as a loving Father, ready and willing to give all things to His children? My daily prayer is that I may be able to help some other to see the way and know God.—
