When living in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1909, I asked a friend to tell me how to get help in Christian Science for my child who was down with scarlet fever. A practitioner was called and came in the afternoon. She told me God was the healer and we had no need to fear. During that night we had our testing time with the throat, I told my little girl that I did not know what the lady was doing, but I felt she had told us the truth, and we both fell asleep. In the morning there was no trace of fever nor of throat trouble and the child was playing in the garden the next day. Of course we took the necessary precautions which the law demands and which our Leader tells us is right to do. I was healed at the same time of a trouble I had had for twelve years, from which I suffered intense pain, and it of course has not returned.
I was wearing glasses at the time. I had worn them for twenty-eight years. My right eye was injured when I was two years old, a broken baby carriage handle piercing it. About nine years before I heard of Christian Science, the doctors in England told me that the sight of that one eye was gone and the other was very poor. I was satisfied that I would have to wear glasses all my life. I spoke to the practitioner in Johannesburg and through her directing my thought to God and His power I knew I could be helped. In less than three years from the time I first heard of Christian Science I discarded my glasses and have not worn them again. I have been tested many times but Christian Science has never failed me. I have this year finished my duties in an office of our church that tested my sight, and I feel now more than ever we have need to spread through the channels or missionaries which Mrs. Eddy provided, the understanding that there is no power but God, good. In "Unity of Good" on page 2 we read, "The true man really saved, is ready to testify of God in the infinite penetration of Truth, and can affirm that the Mind which is good, or God, has no knowledge of sin."
I had no understanding of nor reliance on any God when I first asked what Christian Science was, and through "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" I found a living, ever present God, good, and this gave me the desire to learn from that "key" how to open the way in order to give to others what I had received myself. We all in our family have entirely relied on Christian Science, and since the first treatment we have not resorted to anything but Christian Science.
