I have been interested in Christian Science ever since it was first brought to my attention when I was twelve years old, and have studied the Christian Science Bible Lessons for ten years. In that time I have found it a practical help in every trouble. Two demonstrations of its healing efficacy which, perhaps, stand out most prominently in my experience, are the healing of asthma and of a nervous breakdown.
Asthma was believed to be hereditary in our family, and it first attacked me in the autumn of 1910. I was able, with the application of Christian Science, to overcome it so it did not interfere with my school work during that year. For several years, however, I suffered some very severe attacks at different times and lived in constant fear of its return. Each time the trouble was quickly overcome by absent treatment or by my own realization of Truth. Gradually the attacks became less frequent and finally they ceased, leaving me perfectly free from any symptoms of this trouble. People who have met me within the last year, hearing that I had previously suffered from asthma, have said that they would never have thought of connecting that disease with me, as I am now so well.
The nervous breakdown occurred during the winter of 1914-15, when I was a student at a state normal school. The president of the school considered my case hopeless. He said that my only possible help could come from a neurologist, and doubted the possibility of a complete recovery by any method. That Christian Science is above mortal opinion is proved by the fact that, with its help alone, I was able to return to school before the end of the same school year and to complete my first semester's work. I have taught in the public schools every year since, and have had no further nervous or mental trouble. It took me some time to overcome entirely a feeling of fear and discouragement, but my healing has been sure.
