The desire to express our gratitude...

From the August 1920 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The desire to express our gratitude for all the blessings and healings which my wife and I have experienced through the teachings of Christian Science, prompts me to write my testimony. For many years my wife suffered from severe stomach trouble which, despite the doctor's aid, became worse from year to year, and the attending physician informed me that the sickness was incurable and that her end was near. This was in the spring of 1908. In my desperation I confided in a friend, who called my attention to Christian Science. Immediately we decided to request a Christian Science practitioner's help, which was willingly given. To our great joy, improvement was noticeable after the first treatment, and after a few weeks my wife was freed from this trouble. From that time on she attended the Wednesday evening meetings and Sunday services, often requesting me to accompany her. At that time I was prejudiced, to a certain extent, against all churches but the Swiss Protestant. I refused her well-meant request each time, continuing to do so until 1913, when I finally decided to ask the help of a Christian Science practitioner for relief from rheumatism. I learned that divine Love alone is the great Physician, for after a few days my trouble had vanished and I was completely healed. I now attend the Wednesday evening meetings and Sunday services with pleasure and benefit, finding the reading and testimonies the greatest help.

In the spring of 1917 my eyesight suddenly failed me and I was rendered incapable of work. Owing to my public position, I was obliged by government rules to resort to a physician, who in turn referred me to a specialist. At the same time I requested a practitioner's assistance. Despite material treatment by the two physicians, I was enabled to obviate all fear of this condition, and was convinced that only through God's help could I be free from the trouble. The practitioner's work was then followed by results. The astonishment of the two physicians, upon seeing that my condition was rapidly improving, was great at my next visit, for they had ascertained that the sickness, in their estimation, consisted of cerebral hemorrhage and entire paralysis of the nerves of the left eye, and presumably was regarded as incurable. After seven weeks I was again able to resume my work, and since that time have been able to take care of my work unhindered.

In 1918 my wife had another attack of stomach trouble, which appeared with such severity that we were unable to overcome it ourselves. Therefore she requested a practitioner's help, which was willingly given. After a fortnight the error had completely vanished and she is again enjoying the best of health. Since being interested in Christian Science we have had many further proofs of divine Love's omnipotence, and to my great joy I am also able to state that for more than three years I have not smoked, which healing I owe entirely to Christian Science. For all these healings and blessings we are most grateful to God, to Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and to the practitioners who have helped us. We are endeavoring to learn more of this beautiful teaching and to practice it.—
