TRUTH: THE LAW OF GOD

From the November 1921 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The question asked of Jesus by Pilate, "What is truth?" is typical of a state of mind common to all people and in every age of the world. Although, perhaps, in a vast majority of cases the individual may be unable consciously to phrase the question, this in no way invalidates the statement. The Judean procurator probably was neither less nor more than a type of the thought of the times and, regardless of its brutality, there was doubtless the same desire to know more of the real facts of life that there is to-day. This desire is rooted in every human being. Fortunate indeed are we of this modern time that we have the fruits of the teaching of Jesus Christ explained and demonstrated in Christian Science. To the seeker after spiritual understanding to-day the question, What is truth? is much more than an academic question, it is a demand for intelligent consideration of the most vital factor entering into our lives.

The truth is the primal and eternal law of good, available now, as in all ages, for the benefit of mankind, and which, even though unknown to men, impels their progress. On page 307 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes: "Truth has no beginning. The divine Mind is the Soul of man, and gives man dominion over all things." This law of good, therefore, is a universal law and is applicable to every condition that may arise. No contingency of human existence can be imagined where it does not apply. The truth is the strong arm of divine Love, destroying the armies of hate and disease, and making void the claims of pestilence. This law of universal good destroys every phase of evil, and, being forever unchangeable, is as certainly available now as when Jesus stilled the storm on Galilee, or when he called Lazarus forth from the tomb.

Truth, divine Mind, which is eternally right, can never be confounded with the illusions of the human mind. Truth knows nothing of human illusion, however seductively or persistently it may appeal, however savage or predatory it may seem to be for it is still an illusion, and when the piercing rays of Truth are brought to bear upon it, it has vanished, leaving not a trace, thus demonstrating the primal fact that infinite Mind alone is real. Truth is the solid and indestructible foundation which never disappoints and never fails when the storms of error beat upon it. Sooner or later, every one must learn that the light of Truth is available here and now, and that through its rays all of the so-called problems of human existence are cleared away.
