When conditions have seemed...

From the February 1921 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When conditions have seemed especially tumultuous, the words, "Be still, and know that I am God,"' have helped and sustained me. My first healing through Christian Science was of grief which had resulted in intense suffering that was sapping my strength. A specialist was called by the family, but he could not find anything wrong. It was a morning or two after I had sent a note to a practitioner, asking for help and telling her that the suffering was well-nigh unendurable, that I awakened scarcely moving, trying to retain the peace, quiet, and release from pain which were mine and so different from the previous months of suffering. Since then my experience has been that every problem, every erroneous and inharmonious condition brought to Science, has been overcome.

A little child was walking by her father's side one night and, gazing into a clear sky, began to count the stars, when she suddenly exclaimed that there were so many she could not count them; so it is in Christian Science, so many have been my blessings that they, too, are innumerable. The daily study of the Lesson-Sermon has proved a blessing. In solving a problem something over a year and a half ago there was a sense of isolation and a reluctance to deal with conditions on account of a seeming lack of cooperation, and a desire for some one with whom to confer, but there came to thought the verse in the Bible, "Fear thou not; for I am with thee; be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness," also, "Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law." There followed the realization that all metaphysical work is cooperation, and that the basis of Christian Science is Love. To keep my own thought clear, free of outlining, free of self-interest, and to know that only good was being sought by each, was my endeavor, and there came a distinct assurance of help being received, which was followed by peace, quiet, and happiness, which remained after the conclusion of the affair, and testified to God's omnipotence, to His blessing and protection for all. It was the result of bringing "all the tithes into the storehouse" and it is calling forth such a blessing that there is not "room enough to receive it." It has entirely eliminated a belief of loneliness and has brought more opportunities for the expression of good and its ultimate manifestation.

Thus in turning from personality to Principle, strength and courage have been gained and real joy and happiness revealed through a constantly increasing and clearer understanding of Truth and Life and Love as taught in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, in which she says on page 361, "Spiritual ideas unfold as we advance," and on page 323, "In order to apprehend more, we must put into practice what we already know." —
