It is a great pleasure to give this testimony of the marvelous care and healing power of God. My first experience of Christian Science healing came over twenty years ago; and I wish to state that God's care and protection have been with me ever since. My first healing came at a time of such great need, and was so complete, that I feel I must tell of it, so that it may bring help to some one in as great discouragement.
When I was about twenty years of age, I was taken ill with peritonitis. My mother called the family physician, in whom she had great faith. He treated me for weeks, to no avail. The pain continued with such intensity that he finally resorted to the expedient of giving me drugs to deaden the pain, and at last gave up the case in despair. Then we called the best specialist available in Rochester, and he treated the case; but little improvement was noticed. The pain had been so extreme and continuous that I was very thin and nervous. Finally, a friend who had been in the West during my five months of illness returned, and asked to bring a Christian Science practitioner to see me. I knew nothing of Christian Science; but, despairing of any help from medicine or doctors, I rather listlessly consented to see a practitioner. After three treatments I was absolutely healed; and three days later I went back to business, the first time in five months. Since that first healing, God's power has been our unfailing physician at all times,—even in cases of rheumatism, diphtheria, and acute indigestion. When sickness and trouble come, we can look to God with assurance and confidence; and in place of discouragement and despair, I rejoice and give thanks that I have learned that God's statutes are sure; and I give praise and honor to Mrs. Eddy, who has made it possible for us all to know the truth, and the power of God, here and now.— New York, N.
