Testimonies of Healing

When my daughter was in the...

From the May 1923 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When my daughter was in the lower grades in the public school, medical inspection of schools was started in our city. A visiting nurse came periodically to the school, and, although I had obtained permission from the principal that my children be exempt from such examinations, in an unguarded moment my daughter was examined, and was told that she had adenoids and diseased tonsils. She was sent to the school physician, who confirmed the nurse's diagnosis; and we were advised to have an operation, or the condition would bring on other serious troubles. The child seemed to have considerable trouble with her throat; but we had help in Christian Science, and relief was obtained. Each time, however, that the visiting nurse called at that school, even though she was not examined, my daughter came home with a swollen throat—so swollen at times that she could scarcely speak; but as soon as the fear was met by Christian Science, she was quickly relieved.

This went on until her junior year in high school. For three years previously she had been separated from me, living with my sister in another city, where she was finishing her schooling. Her summers were spent with me. During the summer previous to the incident which I am about to relate, she was swimming and got some water in her ears, which caused a great deal of inflammation in the head and throat. She had a high fever, was delirious part of the time, and seemed to suffer greatly. She was healed in two treatments by a Christian Science practitioner, and was up and entirely well the second day. I felt at that time we should hear no more of the tonsils and adenoids, as I felt a healing had taken place regarding that condition.

Imagine my surprise some months later, to receive a letter stating that she still had sore throat, and asking my permission to have the long-suggested operation performed. She said as we had given Christian Science a trial all these years and she was not healed, she would like to have the operation performed and be rid of that trouble. I wrote and told her that she was now old enough to make her own decisions in such matters, but asked her to consider it carefully before taking such a step. Then I left her with God, feeling that whatever experience she went through, divine Love was there waiting for her to see, when her eyes were opened.
