In the twelve years that I have been a student of Christian Science it has proved itself to me to be the law of God in the working out of human problems,—inexorable toward evil, but ineffable love to my daily needs.
Through close contact with a so-called contagious disease named "itch" my daughter and I let its ugly pictures into our thought, and these soon manifested themselves on our bodies. Both my daughter's hands were in a dreadful condition,—badly swollen, and not a well spot on them. We were advised by friends that this disease could not be healed by Christian Science, and that we must resort to certain material remedies. After trying for some time to meet the alarming conditions through our own understanding of the truth, we asked for the help of a Christian Science practitioner. This was lovingly and faithfully given, and in a few weeks my daughter was able to lay aside the bandages; and after further mental work her hands were completely healed. She was excluded from attending grammar school during the healing process; but she read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, entirely through, and parts of other writings by Mrs. Eddy; also the Lesson-Sermons were read daily. From all of these she has reaped a rich reward of spiritual understanding.
As indicated above, the same disease attacked me; but it assumed a different form and was manifested in painful swelling, which developed into a running sore. Only through the strength which comes from an understanding of Christian Science could I have kept about my daily duties. Finally, with the patient help of a practitioner, my healing was also made complete.
These two healings stand as lights in our pathway, for we surely proved the truth of that wonderful statement of the Psalmist: "If I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I . . . dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me." My heart goes out in loving gratitude to our beloved Leader for the discovery and founding of this wonderful Christian Science, whereby it is made possible in this age for its students to follow, in the degree of their understanding, the example of the Master in healing both disease and sin.—
