When Christian Science was brought to my attention it found me suffering from a nervous and organic trouble of seven years' standing, continually getting worse, after all the kind efforts of the physician and osteopath had failed. I immediately began the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and found a great deal of comfort and relief, although there was much in the book I did not understand.
Several weeks later I dislocated my knee; and for the first time sought aid from a Christian Science practitioner, who was an entire stranger to me. I mention this because she immediately told me that it was my ignorance of God that had caused all my trouble. This was quite a shock to me, because I had always thought very seriously about God. I realized in a few moments' time that I was being told the truth, as my prayers had all been unanswered; and then I asked her for a treatment. The result was that I experienced an instantaneous healing of the knee trouble. What joy this brought to me, to feel and see the power of the Christ, Truth!
I then wanted to know something more about this truth that had healed me; and in my study I found the words on page 390of Science and Health to be true, "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony." As I gained some understanding of God, my ailments began to disappear. The entire healing took some months; and I am very grateful for this because I had more opportunity to study, and consequently gained a little more understanding of the truth. When attacks of pain came, I always turned immediately to the textbook, and always found relief. I am very happy to say God kept me from ever being discouraged, for I realize now what a hindrance discouragement would have been to me.
