THE PRACTICE OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the March 1924 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE manner of love which Jesus manifested in his healing work, and which drew all men unto him, proved that he was a man of God, and that his godliness was an impelling attraction. This essential characteristic of the divine nature is nowhere more clearly evidenced than in his healing of the one demented, who came to him out of the tombs of the Gadarenes.

As recorded by Mark, in the fifth chapter of his gospel, the narrative vividly portrays the gentle Nazarene reflecting that perfect Love which knows no fear, drawing unto him and healing the one insane. Although the latter's delusions were legion, he found in the Christ the power which caused him to give up his false, human concepts and to follow willingly and obediently the truth which makes free. To demonstrate this truth of being was the life-work of our Master. The Bible records reveal that the reason of his love was his spiritual understanding of the availability of divine Mind to heal every form of disease and sin. Before this understanding of Love, the thought-forms of evil, though legion, never failed to yield. The healing of the demented one discloses that in the presence of the Christ every manifestation of error is forever silenced.

One may well ask one's self what this power and attraction is. Whence comes it? Is its origin divine? How may it be attained? These and many other questions arise as one searches the Scriptural records of the Master's healing work. It is Christian Science which furnishes the key to this vision, overcoming fear and disease, and enabling men to be Godlike. It provides the means whereby one recognizes the mental nature of every physical form of error. Through its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the Discoverer and Founder of this Science, Mary Baker Eddy, has given to the world the Science of the divine order, and revealed the spiritual law governing the healing of sickness and sin. In speaking of her discovery Mrs. Eddy states in Science and Health (p. 123): "Divine Science, rising above physical theories, excludes matter, resolves things into thoughts, and replaces the objects of material sense with spiritual ideas." Through the application of the rules contained in the Christian Science textbook, one may prove the power of Mind over matter, Love over fear, and Life over death.
