HUMILITY

From the December 1925 issue of The Christian Science Journal

MEEKNESS is strength, not weakness; humbleness is seen in the overcoming of evil, not in submission to it; humility in its true nature and significance brings ascension. In building it is well to examine each stone that goes into our structure, or we may find ourselves deceived; for it may occur that stones which appear most promising are unfit for use. The effect of ignorance concerning any phase of life tends to enslave the senses and disrupt human endeavor. Ignorance, which is always negative in its hold and claims, in its most subtle forms is cruel and devastating; and never is it more pernicious than when arrogating to itself the claim of intelligence.

That in order to be humble one must be yielding and subservient to human demands is a fallacy that has ever endeavored to project itself into the masonry of character building. The human so-called mind is inclined to listen to specious arguments about being submissive and abased before one can be exalted. But when ignorance has yielded to a better intelligence, we find that true worth and right exaltation are the result of the uplifted and constructive thought, and come through growth, unfoldment, and development, having nothing in common with weakness.

The humility and simplicity of Christ Jesus proved his strength and greatness. Jesus was the meekest man the world has ever known; yet he showed no sense of human weakness, no abasement of true self hood, no temporizing with doubtful ideals, no submission to error. And there is no reason why any follower of the Christ, Truth, should yield his honest convictions, his sense of integrity, his own high purpose to follow meekly and humbly the ideals of the Master, to any argument or demand of the carnal mind.
