SPIRITUAL man exists at the point of perfection. As Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 475), he is "that which has no separate mind from God; that which has not a single quality underived from Deity; that which possesses no life, intelligence, nor creative power of his own, but reflects spiritually all that belongs to his Maker." From the human standpoint mankind seems to exist in certain mental states, working its passage from human belief to the understanding of Being, conquering step by step the wrong thinking which is the Adam-heritage, and making way by degrees for the consummation of divine inheritance.
A nation may be regarded as a collection of the multitudinous beliefs of so-called mortal mind. It is made up of individuals; and it must follow that the spiritual altitude of a nation is determined by the spiritual perception manifested by the individuals composing it. The history of a nation is no more than the collective manifestation of its individual thinking; and it thus follows that he who has eyes to see may find in the pages of sacred history all the guidance necessary for the overcoming of his own personal problems, all the encouragement, all the admonition and warning he needs to carry him safely through any human experience.
It is significant of the deep sleep which fell upon Adam that until Mrs. Eddy roused humanity with the marvelous revelation known as Christian Science, few had thought of the Bible narrative in just this light. And few had dreamed that the experience of the children of Israel on their way from Egypt, the land of bondage, to the promised land beyond Jordan, is symbolic of the experience through which every mortal must pass as he makes his way, step by step, up
