OBEDIENCE TO MORAL AND SPIRITUAL LAW

From the August 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

OUR beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has lifted up the standard of true education for all the nations of the earth, and for all time, in the statement on page 62 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "The entire education of children should be such as to form habits of obedience to the moral and spiritual law, with which the child can meet and master the belief in so-called physical laws, a belief which breeds disease." But until one has begun to comprehend how much is included in obedience to moral and spiritual law, it may be thought that Mrs. Eddy has made too sweeping a demand in this statement.

An earnest contemplation, however, of the full significance of our Leader's words just quoted brings the student step by step to a solid rock or foundation on which to build, in the understanding of the essentials for the education not only of children, but also of men and of nations. In many places throughout her writings she has emphasized the importance of, and linked together, these words "moral" and "spiritual," and in the same order as above, the word "moral" preceding the word "spiritual."

It has long been acknowledged that the moral law contained in the Ten Commandments is the basis for the regulation and protection of society by all civilized governments, through the adoption of statutes and laws which embody their spirit and purpose. Can any thoughtful person doubt that the discord and confusion manifested throughout the world today is due to ignorance of, and disregard for, this all-embracing moral law of God, and that the understanding of its beneficent operation, and obedience to it, would establish harmony, peace, and prosperity? When we consider how much of the so-called education of to-day is the building up in thought of belief in physical laws, we perceive how vital is the need for the understanding of moral and spiritual law, and constant obedience to it.
