PROCESS OF REVERSAL

From the August 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

BECAUSE through observation and experience he had gained more of the wisdom which leads to greater spiritual discernment, the Preacher could write, "Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions."

To reach the conclusion that God made man "upright," because man reflects the divine Principle of uprightness, and that the upright are not dependent upon human inventions for their uprightness, is to be able to prove by the reversion and inversion of the human beliefs about man that no other conclusion is possible. This method of demonstration may seem like a slow process; but at each step of the way the facts become clearer, and there opens a vast field of spiritual research, wherein every thought, word, and deed may be measured by the one standard of perfection, God and man made in His image and likeness. By means of this standard of perfection, the upright, Godlike man becomes known as the demonstrable fact. To learn how the upright man is a demonstrable fact one must resolve material theories and inventions back to their original source or false premise of mortal belief, change the mortal concept for the spiritual idea, and seek for the unfolding in consciousness of the true image or likeness of God. This brings into vision the new heaven and new earth, opening to view the spiritual universe.

That this reversion and revision is possible under existing human conditions is one of the leading points brought out in the teachings and by the demonstrations of Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 120), distinctly states how this transformation may be accomplished, when she says, "Science reverses the false testimony of the physical senses, and by this reversal mortals arrive at the fundamental facts of being." False material sense testimony is based upon the assumptions of so-called mortal mind, every evidence of which must be refuted with the arguments of Truth. When this false evidence disappears, the real facts of existence are found to be based, not upon human laws and conjectures, but upon divine Principle. It is the understanding of Principle which reverses erroneous statements, reveals man and the universe as forever existing in Life's sweet harmonies, denies human discords, turns and overturns man-made speculations and inventions, and rejects every materialistic belief.
