THE TEST

From the August 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Angels throng; the day is blessed!
Now withdraws the crucial test,
Which was given but to prove
Sole dependence on His love.
Did the trial seem severe?
Did a very bitter tear
Fall from pity-centered self?
Ah, but think of all the wealth,
Joy, and gladness that has come,
And the victory that is won,
And the freedom and the health!
It is surely worth the while
Thus to see the heavens smile,
Blazon on the tears of earth
Crystal globes, of Spirit's birth.
Aye, and hear your triumph song,
Echoing down the ages long,
Through the corridors of time.
Memory of man divine
Comes to many a sleeping thought
By the victory that was wrought.

By the freedom that was won,
Many multitudes shall come
Unto Christ, the perfect man,
He who by the Father's plan
Has dominion and is free,
Now and through eternity.
