Whenever I have turned to the testimonies of Christian Scientists and used them in the way our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, meant them to be used,—as bearing witness to the fact that God is Love,—I have always been helped.
After knowing of Christian Science and its blessings for ten or twelve years, but never really standing for it or using it entirely, I was suddenly awakened to this truth through an accident. I escaped unharmed, but was sufficiently shaken up mentally to wonder why I had been so protected. On reaching home I turned to my copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and read until I came to the statement on page 19, "If living in disobedience to Him, we ought to feel no security, although God is good." I felt ashamed of having something I had not deserved or earned. From that time on I have honestly tried to serve God with my whole heart. I can only say that as a result the blessings received have been too many to write down. But the knowledge that I have tried to be honest with God and myself has been in itself the biggest of blessings.
About eight years ago my little daughter, then two years old, was beautifully healed of the worst form of intestinal trouble. Four doctors and two nurses had attended the child, lovingly doing all in their power to help her. Finally, after nine months of struggle, the child's father gave his consent to Christian Science treatment. My relief was too great for words, for I knew that she would be healed. Christian Science treatment was then humbly asked for, and absent treatment was given. On either the first or the second day of the treatment, two of my neighbors saw the child. These friends said that I was surely killing her; but I knew that she was really being healed instead. She then had just strength enough to call for water. This I gave her as often as she called for it. That night I went to bed for the first time in nine months, keeping in thought the Bible passage, "I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep," for, as the Scriptures also assure us, "underneath are the everlasting arms." The child called for water three times during that night; and each time I went to her I saw that she was better. The third time I realized that she was normal. In the morning she asked for food and sat up at the table and had a real breakfast, the first of its kind in nine months. Christian Science treatment was continued for two or three weeks more, however, until every vestige of the disease, such as a cough and undeveloped legs, had vanished. Many friends living around us witnessed this healing, and I am glad to say rejoiced with us. One of the physicians who had attended the child in her sickness saw her later and marveled at her health, and asked if she was always as well as she looked.
