Testimonies of Healing

It is over twenty years since my...

From the September 1926 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is over twenty years since my first healing through spiritual power took place. I was healed of rheumatism by one week's treatment in Christian Science; but the light of the truth taught in Christian Science had come to my consciousness about two years before that, at the time of the birth of our second child. I had a glimpse of a "new heaven and a new earth," but did not know how to make these truths, which had come to me, practical. In the first treatment I began to get a little understanding, and many questions which I had been asking for years were being answered —not by any person, but through the "still small voice." The Bible was a new book, and its pages became illumined. I had found the truth. And I knew it was the truth; for at the end of the first week I had proved it, because I was healed. I have never had the slightest return of rheumatism since. This was the first of many physical ills that were met and overcome through the application of the truth. Many times the work was done just through my own reading and the effort which I put forth. Nervousness was the last of the numerous ailments to leave, but it, too, has gone, and quiet and peace have taken its place.

Christian Science, has been the only physician in our home during all these intervening years. It has taken care of the many minor ills of childhood, and has proved a sure protection against the contagious diseases which try to make childhood miserable. For all these blessings I am indeed most grateful; but my deepest gratitude is that I have found the God who is Love, and who is so near that I can go to Him day or night; that in Him I live, and move, and have my being.

I should like to tell of a more recent experience, which gave me a wonderful assurance of the protecting power of God's love. I had climbed upon a chair to attach the cord of the washing machine to the electric light socket. The chair was slightly beyond an open doorway, and a pail was on the floor directly behind it. On stepping back to get down, my foot hit the rim of the pail and I slipped and began to fall. Immediately I began declaring the truth for myself. I was conscious of gently swaying to one side of the door frame, and then over to the other side; and just before I reached the floor these words came to me: "Underneath are the everlasting arms." When I came in contact with the floor my weight was on both hands, and I experienced but a slight shock. How could one be hurt with God's arms under one? I went on with the duties of the day, and was able to attend a Christian Science lecture that same evening, perfectly well, and with no sense of soreness or discord.
