CHRIST JESUS

From the December 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IF one were to name the person whose life had been most minutely scrutinized in its every aspect through the longest period of time, that person beyond question would be Christ Jesus. Upon the life, teachings, works, character, and mission of the Nazarene the light of investigation has been turned at its full until it seems that nothing remains hidden that may be revealed, and that nothing more remains to be said about this marvelous man. During the early centuries of the Christian era, while the direct influence of his personality was still present, his teachings and works underwent the most searching examination. This intense investigation continued; and yet in this twentieth century interest has not abated, and the search goes on.

The flood of literature dealing with the Founder of Christianity steadily multiplies, and at no period of modern times, at least, has the interest in his life been so keen as now, or the search for information regarding him more zestful. Why is this? Why should the desire to learn more of this man persist? The answer is found in the fact that Christ Jesus revealed that for which mankind most deeply yearns: knowledge of God, His attributes and powers; knowledge of man as God's likeness; knowledge of reality, of that which is truly substantial and exists forever. And moreover, Christ Jesus demonstrated, as it had not been exemplified before, the use to which this understanding might be put in the destruction of discord, of disease, of sin, and the overcoming of so-called material law, even of death itself.

Specifically he did these things: he healed diseases of various types, dementia, blindness, paralysis, leprosy, and probably every form of ailment presenting itself in that land of many diseases. The Gospel record reads, "And great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all." And again we read, "And they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them." Jesus was the great Metaphysician, who, without material remedies, was able to relieve humanity of its ancient burden of sickness.
