COMFORT FROM ABOVE

From the December 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"THEY shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more." Thus wrote Jeremiah. The Bible bears witness to a wholly good God and the healing power of divine Love, eternal facts which corroborate the words of the prophet.

Uncounted hosts would have been saved needless suffering and despair had they heeded Jeremiah's comforting words, and sought and received the true understanding of the divine nature. God, as proved by Christ Jesus, is divine Love; and Christian Science shows how all may confidently open their hearts to Him without fear, knowing that He is aware of the least desire for good, and purges and rewards all who honestly seek spiritual light. All that is unlike God, including the unhappy effects of wrong thinking and acting, can be cast out of one's thought and life by following the Christ, Truth.

In the Old Testament may be traced two distinct records. The one bears witness to God as Love and to the blessings following trustful obedience to the Decalogue, revealed by the Father-Mother in the spirit of mercy, healing, and protection. The other shows all the suffering which results when God is misunderstood, feared, and disobeyed. Most competent people of to-day, whether professing to be religious or otherwise, willingly acknowledge that the difficulties of mortals are not chargeable to God, but are the result of ignorance and disobedience. They will admit that we could have more of heaven on earth here and now if we would but practice the good we know. Long ago the Psalmist recognized the plight of mortals, saw their eventual turning to that which is above and beyond human belief, saw that God would send a Redeemer able to correct all error. And so the Psalmist sang: "Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses. ... He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions."
