IN the eighth chapter of the book of Proverbs there is set forth the excellency of wisdom or understanding; and the appealing call of wisdom voiced therein is being heeded by those who have ears to hear: "Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man." The eternal blessings derived from following in the path of understanding are graphically set forth. Strength, spiritual riches, honor, righteousness, blessedness, and life—these are named as some of the sure rewards of gaining an understanding of God.
Solomon, during his memorable visit to Gibeon, after he had been called to be king over Israel, saw clearly the value of spiritual understanding. Thus he was led to ask God for understanding above all else, as indicated in his words, "Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart." It is generally conceded by thinking people that Solomon made a wise choice when he prayed for understanding. It is safe also for us, at this vital period of the world's history, to seek to learn, so far as possible, the lessons which we individually need, and to cherish this priceless gift of spiritual understanding.
In reality, God is ever imparting understanding to man, who, in Science, is inseparable from his divine Principle, infinite Love. The human quest for a higher and better understanding is the evidence of man's response to the loving impartations of the divine Mind. It is our answer, "Here am I," to the insistent call of omnipotence. As human belief yields to spiritual understanding, the light of divine Science reveals possibilities of present useful achievement before unrecognized. It is divinely natural that we should utilize, in growing measure, the boundless resources of infinite Soul. The spontaneous and unlimited nature of the understanding of God is clearly set forth by the wise man when he says, "Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it."
