Testimonies of Healing

I became interested in Christian Science...

From the February 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I became interested in Christian Science soon after my wife started to study it. I had to admit that Christian Science was doing her good, though I qualified the admission with the thought that religion was a good thing for women but was not meant for men. My wife did not try to convert me; but when, a few months later, during her absence from home, I was suddenly stricken with a severe attack of jaundice, the thought came to me that now was the time to test for myself whether Christian Science could heal.

I wrote to a practitioner who had helped my wife. To my surprise, the letter I received telling me that treatment was being given, gave me no instructions as to my procedure, but in a very simple, beautiful way just lifted my thought to the true idea of God as the Giver of all good. That night I prayed as best I could that if Christian Science were true I should be able to understand it. It was a prayer of true desire, and such prayer is never unanswered. At that time I had hardly read a word of Christian Science literature.

Two days later the symptoms of the illness had disappeared. The third day I met a friend who had had this illness several times. He would not believe that I had had it, in spite of the assurance of his daughter, who had seen me two days before when the symptoms were unmistakable and I was almost too weak to walk. I bought a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The following day I went to Wales, and the fifth day walked about fifteen miles over the mountains. I shall never forget that walk. I was filled with a new hope in life. The physical healing had convinced me that Christian Science is true. I had never understood the Bible; but here was the fulfillment of its teachings. The truth of the Bible! I was convinced that this was the truth which Jesus knew, that it was meant to be understood by all men, and that what had been done for me might be done for others. It is now some years since then, and opportunities have come to me of proving the truth under many circumstances.
