THE INDIVISIBLE GOOD

From the February 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

ON page 335 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, states, "Spirit is the only substance, the invisible and indivisible infinite God." What an inspiring, strengthening thought is this indivisibility of one infinite God, represented by our Leader in the seven synonyms for Deity see (Science and Health, p. 465)! Spirit, for example, is of necessity indivisible, since it includes no matter, and cannot possibly be divided against itself. No material or finite belief emanates from, or penetrates, the infinite and eternal Mind, God; hence every communication from God to His pure reflection, spiritual man, is true, eternal, joyous, and healthful. Every sincere seeker has immediate and perpetual access to this indivisible unity of good, which is a veritable sanctuary and haven of refuge for all. Truly did Christ Jesus, the great Way-shower, state, "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture." Every moment, therefore, the specific inspiration which each one needs is within his reach.

With marvelous patience and wisdom Mrs. Eddy points out the mental footsteps which must be taken in order that each one may learn how to give increasing evidence of his own indissoluble unity with God, good. He must at all times acknowledge that the power of good is 'supreme, and is equal to meeting every emergency that may seem to befall mortals. No lie of mortal belief affects infinite Truth. Precisely because this is the unalterable fact, the constant effort of the so-called carnal mind, the father of lies, appears to be to dispute, discredit, disguise, or deny the fact of the supremacy of good, and, if possible, so to discourage the true seeker that he may be deceived into either abandoning his spiritual quest or else pursuing it half-heartedly. Christian Science enables us to recognize that these fallacies of the carnal mind are the anti-Christ, the opposite of Christ, Truth. If the way of demonstration seems to be a long and a steep way, let it be remembered that infinite Truth, God Himself, is supplying us with that undismayed persistence and perpetual spiritual joy which every true seeker requires.

How encouraging it is to realize that it is God, our heavenly Father-Mother, who has implanted in our heart the yearning desire to be faithful and courageous, and that divine Mind is directing, sustaining, protecting, and bringing into full fruition the true ideas and desires which come to each one of us from the very heart of infinite Love. Therefore, the alert and grateful student of Christian Science renders "unto God the things that are God's." He fearlessly turns his back on the lying suggestion that his faith or his courage is failing, and mentally faces the glorious fact of the indivisibility of Spirit, which leaves neither time, space, nor opportunity for so-called material error to operate anywhere, under any disguise or pretense. Hence, the only foe to be vanquished is mortal self-deception; and, as our Leader tells us on page 339 of "Miscellaneous Writings," "Experience is victor, never the vanquished; and out of defeat comes the secret of victory."
