INCORRUPTION

From the February 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN an age when corruption seems to be much in evidence, when not only commercial and political activities but even home and church relations seem to be affected by it, how hope-inspiring are the words of Paul, "This corruptible must put on incorruption"! A dictionary defines "corruptible" as, "subject to decay." It is evident that all material things are "subject to decay," and that if mankind is ever to realize its innate yearning for permanent peace, unvarying health and happiness, immutable love, and abiding wealth, the quest must no longer be made in the realm of fading, fleeting matter, or for a material self which testifies only of mutation. Yet the Scriptural language is imperative, and wisdom certainly directs that the transformation begin at once.

Christ Jesus showed the world exactly how to overcome corruption in whatever guise presented, but few glimpsed the meaning of his teachings; and acts which he intended as examples, mistaken theology set aside as mysterious phenomena impossible of emulation. So, centuries of preaching have followed, without much patterning of his works toward the putting on of incorruption.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has provided for this and succeeding ages a textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the study and application of the rules of which in connection with the Bible enable the weary wanderer to find his way out of the maze of sin, sickness, and trouble into an incorruptible realm of harmony. The Bible teaches that God is Spirit, is good, is All, and that matter is unreal; or, as the Master expressed it, "the flesh profiteth nothing." But it remained for Mrs. Eddy to rediscover the truth and to set it forth as the demonstrable Science of Christ, or Christian Science, thus enabling all to prove that since matter is unreal, sin and sickness are also unreal; hence, that they may be overcome. On page 267 of this textbook she writes, "Every object in material thought will be destroyed, but the spiritual idea, whose substance is in Mind, is eternal."
