REALITY

From the February 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THROUGHOUT the ages the search has been going on for the real, for eternal truth as distinguished from temporal error—for reality. Philosophers have devoted themselves to this search, and the records of their work are contained in many a tome. And while the devotion of these men will readily be admitted, and it will not be denied that they have thrown much light on the so-called human mind, still, it has to be recognized that their conclusions regarding reality have been largely conjectural and tentative.

The reason for this is that the unaided human mind is incapable of grasping absolute spiritual truth. This so-called mind being finite in its outlook, it is impossible for it to grasp that which pertains to the infinite. Is it impossible then to gain an understanding of Truth—the source of all truth? Must men be content with superficial aspects of things? Or is there a mode of approach to the real by a way other than that of mere human reasoning? The answer is that it is possible to understand reality, that men should not, therefore, be content with a superficial sense of things, and that there is a well-defined method of approach to Truth.

Now Christian Science is very specially concerned with the great question of reality. It may be that this is not generally recognized; for most people think of Christian Science as having to do mainly, if not wholly, with healing—healing of disease and sin. And while Christian Science has come to be known throughout the world through the healings it has accomplished, nevertheless, its teachings, which make its healings possible, are all based on an understanding of reality. Without this understanding there would be no absolute Science of healing.
