Testimonies of Healing

What I deemed for years unjust...

From the February 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What I deemed for years unjust persecution, indignities of dishonesty and disloyalty, also rigid bondage to person and place,—thoughts which resulted in bodily suffering,—proved indeed to be angels entertained unawares; for while I was earnestly praying to our Father one evening, while prostrate in suffering, there came to my consciousness the soft-winged dove of peace, as if to assure me that there was a God watching over me, that He heard my cry, and that divine help was near. Very soon a friend presented me with a very old edition of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had read but a few pages when I found my desire to focus my thoughts answered, and thereby was enabled to retain the full sense of a statement by the time I had reached its concluding words. As I read on, fascinated by the truth, I lost the belief that I had ever suffered from rheumatism, constipation, or piles. However, the particular ill for which I had entered upon the study of Christian Science was daily headaches. This was not to be so readily destroyed.

I should have stated that prior to being shown the way through Christian Science, I had described my physical suffering to many physicians, and had taken their material potions without receiving the least benefit. For nine years I had suffered from headaches, and had battled with worry over loss of material substance and its attendant train of evils. For a time I would be able to control my thoughts; then mental suggestion would seem to bring back the error until I burned with resentment. At last aggressiveness yielded to right thinking, and I was willing to abide by the injunction of Jesus: "What is that to thee? follow thou me." From that time to the present Christian Science has been my only physician.

Space in the columns of this precious periodical forbids the enumeration of other healings, including healing by mental surgery—all in consonance with Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health (p. 316), "Christ, Truth, was demonstrated through Jesus to prove the power of Spirit over the flesh,—to show that Truth is made manifest by its effects upon the human mind and body, healing sickness and destroying sin." Gratitude for Mrs. Eddy will live forever in the hearts of all loyal Christian Scientists.—
