Testimonies of Healing

With profound gratitude to and...

From the February 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

With profound gratitude to and reverence for our dear Father-Mother God, and with gratitude also to our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, and our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, I submit this testimony, sincerely trusting it may help some friend along the road from sense to Soul. When I commenced reading some copies of the Christian Science Sentinel which were lent me by a very dear friend, I was slowly recovering from what seemed a very acute form of pleurisy, accompanied by frequent relapses. Soon I began to show a marked improvement physically, as I applied myself sedulously to the study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

It is the wonderful story of the recovery of my sight which I should like to relate especially. Several years ago I suffered great pain in one of my eyes, and was constantly under a doctor's care. As great fear was manifested I was placed in the care of an eye specialist, who did his best for me; and after I had been some time under his supervision, the difficulty seemed to have been overcome. To my dismay the trouble reappeared about five years ago; and besides suffering the most excruciating pain at intervals, I could not see clearly. I had the greatest difficulty in marking my register in school, and could do so only by shading my eyes with my hand. I was constantly told by friends that I should consult an optician and wear glasses, and I was tempted to do this; but I overcame the desire and sought the help of a dear practitioner instead, who instantly denied the error so emphatically that I never again lost hope of a perfect recovery. On page 586 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy we read: "Eyes. Spiritual discernment,—not material but mental." This I held to continually, and I kept on reading steadfastly in Science and Health. Never shall I forget the joy I experienced one Sunday morning, when the print suddenly seemed bigger and clearer. I actually cried for joy, in great humility, and with deep-felt gratitude to God.

For this wonderful healing, and also for that of quinsy, tonsillitis, fatigue, impatience, and fear, I am truly grateful. Words are inadequate to express all I feel for this glorious and wonderful truth. My great desire is to progress humbly and reverently, and to try to demonstrate even a little of this wonderful and all-embracing truth.—
