Filled with joy I express my profound gratitude to God, ever present Love, who led me to Christian Science, through which I have gained the true knowledge of Deity, and have been healed. After I had been a medical nurse in Germany for ten years, I was taken seriously ill, so that it was necessary for me to go to my home in Jugoslavia, near Belgrade. I was under the treatment of four doctors. After an X-ray examination had been made the doctors diagnosed the trouble as tuberculosis of the spine in its worst stage, and gave me no hope of recovery; but to relieve the pain somewhat I was placed in an orthopedic corset with supports, in which I had to lie day and night for over a year. Besides this, serious stomach trouble asserted itself; and I could take less and less nourishment. So my stomach too was X-rayed, and gastric ulcers were found. For years I had obeyed the doctors' orders implicitly. I had tried X-ray, sun rays, and mountain air treatments, and salt water baths; but in spite of all this, and although I followed the strictest diet, my condition, especially the stomach trouble, grew so much worse that I was advised to undergo an operation.
My sister in America advised me not to rely any longer on material remedies, but to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and to turn to a Christian Science practitioner for help. I tried to read the book, but could not understand it at first and allowed myself to be persuaded to try the mountain air again. However, error attacked me so badly one day that I simply could not endure the intense pain in my stomach, head, and back, and I prayed continually to God to deliver me from the pain. All at once an inner voice said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." This thought became clearer and clearer to me, until I was thoroughly resolved to give up all material remedies and also the operation which had been planned, to seek help in Christian Science, and devote myself earnestly to its study. This decision enabled me to get up and write to a practitioner. After that I read several hours daily in the textbook. Then I was able to take a little more nourishment and digest it; and some weeks later I was able to take the long journey alone to Dresden in the hope that I might understand Christian Science better, and be completely healed. Although the practitioner took a most loving interest in me, it seemed impossible at first to overcome the error, which again and again asserted itself. But I was all the happier when after four weeks I was able to discard the orthopedic corset forever. My back and stomach also were completely healed.—Surcin, Srem, Jugoslavia.
