From the November 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In May, 1926, when through a business colleague I first heard of Christian Science, I was miserable in every respect. It seemed as though no suffering had been spared me, and it looked as though physical and mental afflictions would engulf me altogether. I therefore declared my willingness to accept this wonderful teaching. We procured the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and with joy, yet with a peculiar sense of fear, I went to a practitioner.

I was suffering from acute intestinal catarrh with abscesses, and from rheumatic pains in the joints. The complaint had had its beginning four years previous to this in a weakening of the intestinal functions. An eminent physician had promised an early recovery, but although he prescribed remedies of increasing strength they were of no avail. On the contrary, the trouble was aggravated, and in the spring of 1925 I was obliged to give up my work. Other physicians were consulted and their prescriptions followed, but the complaint grew more and more tormenting, and finally I was not able to work at all. In this condition I was sent to a specialist for physical therapeutics, who treated me with great care and love, and some relief was experienced. In January, 1926, I tried to take up part of my work again, but only for a short time, as severe intestinal hemorrhages set in and my fear increased. Then my physician told me that an operation was almost unavoidable, but as no one would guarantee an improvement I could not decide upon an operation.

Just at this time God's grace was bestowed upon me and I was led to a Christian Science practitioner. She made it clear to me that God is divine Truth and Love before whom all error must yield; that only good comes from God; that He is omnipotent, ever present, and always ready to help. After a few days I felt so well that I wanted to commence work. With the firm conviction that God was leading me I went to work and was able to continue. Although many struggles had to be fought before the complete victory on the side of God, good, was won, everything yielded to the power of Truth.
